Seasonal Rug Care in India: Monsoon, Summer & Winter

India's seasons are hard on textiles — humidity, dust and sun all take a toll. A little seasonal care keeps a handcrafted rug looking new for decades.

Monsoon: the moisture months

  • Improve airflow — fans and open windows on dry spells prevent damp and musty odours.
  • Lift rugs off perpetually damp floors; use a breathable underlay.
  • Dry any spills or splashes immediately to avoid mildew.
  • If a rug gets genuinely wet, dry it flat and fully before rolling or storing.

Summer: dust and sun

  • Vacuum weekly (no beater bar) to lift settled dust.
  • Rotate the rug every few months so sun-fade and footfall wear evenly.
  • Keep harsh afternoon sun off vibrant colours with sheer curtains.

Winter: the cosy season

  • This is when wool rugs earn their keep — warmth underfoot and insulation.
  • Shake out or gently beat smaller rugs outdoors to refresh the pile.
  • Book a professional deep-clean once a year, ideally after winter.

Everyday habits that help

A no-shoes rule, prompt spill blotting (never rub), and a quality underlay do more for a rug's life than any single deep clean. Treated well, a hand-tufted wool rug is genuinely a multi-decade companion.
