How to Choose the Right Rug Size for Every Room
Share
The right rug grounds a room; the wrong size makes it feel off, however beautiful the design. Here's a simple, room-by-room guide to getting it right the first time.
The golden rule
Leave a consistent border of bare floor around your rug — usually 20–45 cm (8–18 inches) — so the rug frames the space rather than wallpapering it. In larger rooms, go bigger: a rug that's too small is the most common mistake.
Living room
Ideally the front legs of every seat sit on the rug, tying the seating group together. For most Indian living rooms a 5x8 or 6x9 works well; larger, open-plan spaces look best with 8x10 and up, with all furniture legs on the rug.
Bedroom
Two options: a large rug under the lower two-thirds of the bed so you step onto softness each morning, or a pair of runners on either side. For a queen bed, a 6x9 under the bed is a safe, generous choice.
Dining room
Size the rug so chairs stay on it even when pulled out — add about 60 cm (24 inches) beyond the table edge on every side.
Entryway & hallways
Runners should leave a little floor on each side and stop short of doorways. In an entryway, a smaller statement rug sets the tone for the whole home.
Still unsure?
Tape out the size on your floor before deciding — it's the easiest way to feel the proportions. And because every ZaRugs piece is made to order, we can craft any size to fit your space exactly.
